Family photo shoots are a wonderful way to freeze-frame moments in time, creating lasting memories that families can cherish for generations. As a family photographer, I understand the importance of ensuring that every session is enjoyable and successful. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most out of your family photo shoot and capture beautiful, authentic moments.

1. Communicate and Plan Ahead:

Clear communication is key to a successful family photo shoot. Prior to the session, I have a detailed conversation with the family to understand their expectations, preferences, and any specific shots they desire. I will setup a mood board to exchange ideas with the family regarding location/scenes options, clothing choices, and the overall vision for the shoot.

Bonus tip: I will always schedule a video call to let the kids interact with me.

2. Choose the Right Location:

Selecting a suitable location is crucial to setting the right tone for the photo shoot. I will usually provide a list of outdoor locations (“Top outdoor locations for family photoshoot” blog post coming up next) such as parks, beaches, or gardens for a natural and relaxed atmosphere. Alternatively, an indoor shoot at the family's home can capture a cozy and intimate setting.

Bonus tip: Try to choose a location near a playground if possible.

3. Coordinate Outfits, but Keep it Comfortable:

I strongly encourage families to coordinate their outfits in terms of colour schemes and styles, ensuring a cohesive look in the photographs. However, I emphasise comfort to bring out natural expressions and movements during the shoot.

Bonus tip: Uniqlo is a great place to get these clothes at affordable price.

4. Plan the Timing Wisely:

I will always suggest early mornings and late afternoons for photoshoot to provide soft, flattering light, while avoiding harsh midday sun. And making sure this coincides with the family's routine, especially if young children are involved, to ensure everyone is in good spirits during the shoot.

Bonus tip: Please buffer in 15mins additional time before a photoshoot to let the children slowly wake up

5. Encourage Natural Interactions:

I have prompts and shot list to guide every family into natural interactions and candid moments. During planning stage, I will find out more about what the kids like to do and engage them in an activity For example: “Let’s play peekaboo!!!” This is to capture genuine expressions and emotions. Candid shots often depict the true essence of family bonds.

Bonus tip: Always let the children guide

After the photoshoot is completed, I will meticulously cull and edit selected photos, maintaining a natural and timeless look. My edits are on the bright and airy side with pastel tones which enhances the nurturing and bonding vibe for family.
